Time to start a fresh topic for 2019, haven't been out much lately thanks to the weather, but managed a few hours out today to brush the cobwebs off and make a start for the year. Nothing too flash turned up except for the nice 1903-1904 SA dog tag and "gold" religious pendant, the coppers were pretty well hidden and not very obvious targets (1943x2, 1945, 1949 & 1955).

Anyway, good luck to everyone out there on their finds for the year, but more importantly have fun. ;)

Another interesting bag of finds there. Good work and good to hear you're having fun. That's what it's all about :perfect:

Seems like forever between hunts - with work, weather and enthusiasm working against me. Finally headed out for a couple of hunts, with the first being an older house site (been waiting for vegetation to die back), second hunt was in a park dating back to the early 1900's.

Unfortunately the first site was still pretty hard to get the coil to ground, though showed some promise with a couple of predecs and a crusty 1927-28 dog tag. Plenty of old glass and crockery around, not to mention dozed renmants of former buildings.

The park hunt was just a regular spot that has consistantly provided predecs, though waning a bit on the silver front lately. Determined to flush out a few more good coin finds, I selected the HF 9" coil to hopefully get in between all the junk targets, mainly sticking to 14kHz.

Pretty much had the coppers flowing from the get go, not far from where I had parked all along the edge of the road. Most of the silvers came from gridding around an old tree after stumbling across the 1918 shilling (yay!) . I suspect that I had completely overlooked that spot previously as the shilling gave off a beautiful smooth high tone that really stood out like the proverbial. The threepences have had a hard life, one with mower damage and another that is more concave than flat - the 1927 sixpence was the pick of the bunch condition wise. All up a very relaxing night under a very bright moon and with ideal temperatures. :perfect:

Hopefully I will get out a bit more often after a real slow start to the year, cheers! :D

Plenty of targets to keep you busy ;) at both sites
Thats a pretty big square nail in first pic
and what about those bullets ? :8 They're HUGE

Another clean up trip to the same park as previous, really getting hard to pick out predecs from the industrial junk buried around the place, but still soldiering on.

Only two silvers came to light, a very thin 1927 thrip and a 1951 sixpence, the broach came from a real junky area and was definitely not expecting any jewellery as such. The Dinky Landrover is in great nick aside from missing one wheel, even has some of its original red paint remaining.

Don't know why I dug the tap up as it weighs a ton, guess curiosity got the better of me plus that's one less target to deal with in the future.

I also dipped into war related items with a pair of old Anzac Day pins, and a couple of real nice British General Service buttons, both manufactured in Birmingham. Cheers guys. :D

   I also found a tap on the Landy hunt. Your buttons beat mine. I bet the stone in that brooch was a heart starter.

Yes was a momentary heart starter, though like most costume jewellery I didn't expect anything decent with regards to the "gemstones", or in this case most probably glass. You really have to read the lay of the land here, with the lower spots being the original ground level (prospective for predecs back to the early 1900's), and the disturbed ground which has been pushed higher than the original level (mixed finds, junk, and the odd later predec).

What has been interesting is that number of 50% silver threepences missed by others. Some have been sitting right on the surface and may have been overlooked due to their lower ID/tone reading similar to other junk targets such as pull tabs.

Now that I have some time to spare, had a good chance to visit a couple of sites - first was a former cricket oval that I had hit several times with diminishing returns, and second was a mid 1800's house site that I had yet to hit with the HF coil.

As suspected there weren't many targets at the oval, just two threepences and a pair of roo pennies for a few hours detecting. I hit the second location a couple of days later, and was pleased to see the 9" HF coil did well to sniff out some more targets. That coil is such a button magnet with buttons sounding like they are near surface, though actually quite deep down when excavated. One of the first good targets was the Victorian 1861 half penny, found around the base of a tree, followed by an assortment of targets common on such Vic era sites. Wasn't till I wandered back to the car that I hit the 1879 penny yet again at the base of another tree, and further up the same tree row came the 1932-33 dog tag only a few inches down.

Has been a while since I last found some Victorian coinage, so it was a good way to finish off the day. Still thinking there are more targets to find there, just have to check every nook and cranny to ensure nothing is overlooked. ;)
