Gday all,
Has anyone been up to Cleremont QLD recently and tried out the new gpas ?
Ive heard conflicting reports, wondered if anyone here has actually been to the new areas.

I haven't but did read an article the other day that was glowing like a tourism brochure. Can't find it to put up a link basically it was an article with input from Gray nomad prospectors and the local community business president. In short it mentioned closure of one and the opening of the 2 new ones and how large they are showed a few good nuggets not sure when or where they were found though.

Prospectors are a tight lipped lot so the early birds who know a thing or too are not saying much. There is gold in both of the new GPA's but you need to be prepared to put in the effort as the areas are huge with few tracks. You can't just drive up to a set of diggings and start swinging in sight of you car like the other areas. Going by what I've seen both locations are slightly off the main fault line so are not riddled with diggings, I call this type of ground fringe country which is my preferred prospecting areas.

Fringe country tends to have quite big areas with scattered pieces and then there will be a major gold drop out point away from any known patch, the old boys easily missed these because of the lack of gold leading up to it or in the surrounding areas (remember they had to dig by hand using only a dish as a guide, perfect country for metal detectors).

I've detected the 4 Mile West GPA on 3 occasions and found gold each time just targeting areas that looked productive. First occasion I got 3 1/2 grams in 4 hours and the last two just pointers but all in virgin areas with the potential for more with more time spent. Last time I went out I stumbled upon some virgin diggings in a creek with no dig holes, more work is needed to find where the gold is bleeding out of the surrounding hills.

There are people who have had no luck after a fair few attempts at the new GPAs which like any gold area can come down to many factors. Just like fishing just because you have a river with barra in it does not automatically mean there is going to be a barra on every snag, having an eye for the right locations to spend your time to cut down on wandering around in barren ground goes a long way to improving your chances. If you do not have the skills I recommend not spending ALL your time in the new areas but instead break it up with trips into known ground to get your gold fix to keep the negativity out of your excursions.

The new GPAs are vast tracts of ground with tight scrub in places and few navigable tracks, if your not comfortable getting out of sight of your car its probably best to stick to the better known parts of the Clermont GPAs.

There is gold in the new areas, I have customers who have found 1 ounce plus virgin runs, I've heard of a 1 ounce speci, 8 grammers, patches of smaller pieces etc but like any new area people are going to be tight lipped so you will only hear from the people who have become frustrated.

Thanks JP,
It looks as if its going to be challenging.
Looking forward to it.
Great information you gave.

I spent roughly nine hours just trying areas visable from Brigalow Rd, as JP says the areas are huge and I was doing what JP says you shouldn't do, (swinging in sight of your car).
This is a starting point and I will be going back there.

Thanks Matt,
Well be up there next week. Dont mind the hard work to get to ( good ground ) as long as we have our gps with us, well be ok.
Havent stayed at the dam before - is it good access to the campgrounds ? We travel in our motorhome towing a 4wd.
Thanks,
Col

Sounds like you have a great set up!
How long will you be there for?
I was thinking of going there the weekend of 19th, 20th.

Hi Matt,
We should be there from the 15th.
Staying around 6 weeks - hopefully.

The Dam is about 20k from town, the quickest way to get to the new GPAs coming in from Theresa Creek dam is to turn left off onto the Clermont Alpha bypass road (just before the concrete course way, this will take you past the new solar farm, there are a few Ks of dirt) taking that to the Alpha road then cross onto Old School road and follow that out till you hit the bitumen on the Laglan road and turn left. This will save you a fair few kilometers every day rather than going all the way into town.

I'll be working in Moranbah 0n Friday 18th May, so I'm going to stay in Cleremont (probably the Peppercorn motel) and head into a GPA for some swing time early Saturday.

Went to old gpas in may. First real swing of my 4500 found 5crums and had a ball. Spent 6 hours in a new gpa on my last day heaps of dirt, found nothing still had a ball, cant wait to go back soon before it heats up too much....

Cheers. M-K :pickshovel:

Very nice, those new areas cover a bit of ground, should keep the interest up for a while.

Hi All,

Just moved up from Ballarat to Moranbah and looking to do some detecting around Clermont. Went out yesterday but found the supplied maps very confusing and got a lot of hot rocks. Any pointers to easy places to start would be appreciated. I have an sdc. Thanks

Hi LCE. Hope you enjoy Moranbah. We've spent a fair bit of time there with family who have now moved on. We've always spent time detecting at Clermont and always managed to find gold. I think in time you will come across other detectorists in Moranbah. For a start you could try the lease on Berimigan GPA. It's a pay thing but good. And you can camp there too. Ring 0417331420 which is the number at the back of the Gold Gem & Treasure magazine. All the best. Mrs. J
