Finally starting to work out how to take better photos with the new phone I think. Still could be clearer but here we go anyway.....

Two different views of Marco Voltolini's "Bumblebee" in light yellow citrine. 14 carats.

John Bailey's "Amethyst shield" in Brazillian amethyst. 5.3 carats.

Arya Akhavan's "Fallen Star" in very light Brazillian Rose-de-France amethyst. So light that the pink colour doesn't show in the photo, though it is easily visible to the eye. 8.6 carats.

Lowmead amethyst, un-named barion rectangle with step crown. 3.1 carats.

Cheers Silver!

I haven't photographed a stone for ages because I couldn't get one that looked even remotely like the real thing after missus Iphone carked it but I think I'm working it out with the new one. Still looks a bit fuzzy and the lint stuck to them stands out but I'm getting there.

If there is a vote, it has gotta be for the Lowmead Amethyst big_smile

Cheers everybody. Hardest task so far has been photographing them.

If there is a vote, it has gotta be for the Lowmead Amethyst big_smile

We locals could be slightly biased there big_smile Everyone knows that it's dotted all over the Lowmead area, we just need a property owner with a good deposit on their place to open up a fossicking park. Lowmead amethyst runs the entire spectrum of colour shades and some of it is easily equal to some of the Brazillian material that you can end up paying a few bucks for at gem shows. The harder part is finding really clean facet-grade material.

Nice work lefty. I like the Sheild. Good proportions, sharp meets and a fantastic colour. thumbsup

Thanks SC. It's a nice design but I can't remember which website I got it from. It's a very deep design so you don't want to use too deep-coloured material. In fact, the Brazillian amethyst it was cut in and the Lowmead crystal point I cut the stone in the last photo from were basically the same shade and saturation of purple. I think it would be good for deepening the colour of Rose-de-France amethyst, though I haven't tried yet. It might also deepen the colour of pale blue topaz.

Nephew's Springsure labrodorite finished - 3 ct, un-named barion with a step crown, basically the same as the Lowmead amethyst in the last photo except square instead of rectangular. I enjoy cutting "fantasy" type designs but sometimes relatively simple designs work very well.

As much trouble as I have photographing stones, this stuff seems harder to photograph again. It is clearer, brighter and with a more pronounced yellow tone than the photo shows. Some pieces can be translucent but some are so clear that when you're out at Gemseekers gully near Springsure, it's easy to walk right over good-sized pieces and only see them when you walk back over them again from the other direction.

Nice work again Lefty cool

Have you tried photographing outside in full sunshine with a small bit of paper shading the stone ?

Keen to see you try it out on some of your recent stones to see if you think the technique works. 8) still experimenting myself with how to capture that perfect shot.

Marco Voltilini's "Nymphea" (modified) in light purple-pink Lowemead amethyst.......

Meant to resemble a flower, the outermost tier of crown facets are left lightly frosted to accentuate the floral appearence. Stone finished at 4.6 carats and just over 11mm across.

Stone is offered for sale in the classifieds section of the forum in "For Sale, Hire or Swap".
