I found a ring on the gold fields. It's broken.

How do I tell if it's gold or not?

It has what looks like a hallmark. Like the Rebel Alliance logo from star wars. And a rectangle stamp with two blobs in the middle.

I found an old map from 1899 which showed the location of a miners hut. The ring was found near the hut site. The map said 'Williams Hut'.

I would like to imagine that the ring belonged to the miner who had the hut, or maybe his wife (as it's a bit too small for my fingers). But maybe it was dropped by another prospector, or washed down the creek in a flood. Is there any way to tell how old it is?

Apologies for the poor photos I took with my camera phone. I will clean the ring tomorrow and take some better photos.

Good find! :rainbow:
I reckon it's likely that the ring was resized to fit a particular finger and the soldered join has given way, hence the split (and possibly also the loss of the ring).
