Just wondering.
I found this old button in a very old mullock heap.
The round disc was almost touching the button.
both were about 4 inches deep.

The disk is the same both sides.

Probably a piece of scrap - but has anyone else seen these disks before.

BTY, about 4 years back, I detected and dug (read my daughter dug) a shattered thimble from hard clay, and below it's pieces was a 4.6g nugget at Wild Dog - just East of Dunolly. Was our biggest - guess some poor soul lost them - maybe tromped on the thimble with gold in it. Good thing we re-checked the hole after each piece :)
Re youy avatar, an Engineer would have a third option and say: "the glass is twice as large as it needs to be" - then we wouldn't have this weird discussion. Period!
Good luck on your discovery of the disc's ID. I'm out of clues.

I think those two pieces probably used to be together, inside a flat, cloth-covered button, with the disk mounted on top of the attachment section as a former/support for the cloth covering.
