Mystery Item... or not?

Haven't been out swinging much lately, just managing a few short sessions and not very deep, grounds been a bit hard out here. I did however, dig an interesting little item that (frustratingly) took a me a while to identify. I was just on the verge of giving up the research when I stumbled across the answer. I wonder whether anyone else has found one before or even knows what it is??
Found at a site dating from mid to late 1800s, reads 'FRANCE ... BTE ... C.R...' (looks like some more letters underneath but can't quite make them out). A thin channel runs along the back inside edge.

Yep, that's what I thought originally but after looking at picture after picture after picture I couldn't tell what part of one of those tin plate toys it might be. Some hidden internal part perhaps? But then I saw these. ...

Cool find,it is amazing the things that are being uncovered and brought back above the grass for everyone to enjoy.I'm sure anyone over 40 would remember having one of those. You used to get the tin ones in show-bags.

Just a bit of rubbish to some but I enjoy finding bits like that, gives you a glimpse into the life of the people & families that once lived at the location.
And often makes you think about how much the world has & is changing.
