With so much info available these days via the internet there seems to be a decrease in available info on actual hard printed material.
Just went back through my "library" to see what favourites I go back to for research and goldfields/prospecting information.
Not a massive list but relevant and full of good info ...... here's a list, if you haven't read them before check out your local library. These are Victorian related, someone may be able to do the same for the other states.

History of the Wedderburn Goldfields - J R Grey 1961 Ed.
Old Pubs, Inns, Taverns & Grog Houses of the Vic. Goldfields - J R Flett 1979 Ed.
Goldfields and Mineral Districts of Vic - R Brough-Smyth Fan. Ed. 1990 (orig.1869)
Prospecting for Gold - Ion L Idriess 1966 Ed.
The Gold Mining History of Stawell - G Cameron 2014
Prospectors Guide, Dept of Mines Vic. - 8th Ed. 1968
Ghosts & Gold of Vic. High Country - R M Christie 1993
The Gold Fields of Victoria, Reports of the Mining Registrars -
Quarter Ended December 1886
Quarter Ended June 1886 .... (from memory the complete set is avail. online)

Not Victorian related but likely to get there before getting to W.A.
Gold & Ghosts Vol. 3 Old. Central & Southern Districts - D W De Havelland

If you have any that you recommend please let me know, they are becoming increasingly difficult (and expensive) to find.
Cheers Tom

My collection mostly has a Victorian focus....

Prospectors Guide, Dept of Mines Vic. - 9th Ed. 1970

Panning and Prospecting for Beginners, H.K Garland - 1st Ed. 1975

Old Walhalla-Portrait of a Gold Town, Raymond Paull - 1967 reprint

Gold in the Shire of Mansfield, Alan Wylie - 2nd Ed. 1995

Turtons Creek-Valley of Treasure and Charm, May McMaster - 2005 reprint

Gold at the Ten Mile-The Jamison Goldfield, Brian Lloyd - 1st Ed. 1978

Gold at Gaffneys Creek, Brian Lloyd & Howard Combes - 1st Ed. 1981 (signed)

Kevington-Miners & Families, Brian E Lloyd - 1st Ed. 2012

Gold for the Taking-A Pictorial History of the Heyday of the Walhalla-Woods Point Gold Belt:1860's-1960's - Paoletti's Maps & Videos P/L 2007

Lassetter's Gold- The Mystery of Harold Lasseter and his Fabulously Rich Gold Reef... - Warren Brown 2015

The Brian Lloyd books are now collectable and their price reflects that - I got Gold at the Ten Mile and Gold at Gaffneys Creek for a mere $10 a copy which is a tenth of the price my brother paid for them last year

Nice lot Casper, obviously reflects your maine interest area.
Lot of local Historical Societies have libraries full of local references, worth a look but their opening hours are sometimes prohibitive.
