Sorry Tath. I stole your idea for a topic/section name. :D

I have recently bought myself a Drone and I know an couple of other forum members have them or have ordered one.
So here is the place to discus all things DRONE related.
Mine is the DJI Phantom 4 and over the last few weeks I have collected a few accessories. I have been really amazed at the technology of these flying machines. So much of the flying can be automated. Press a button for Auto take off or landing, return Home feature, obstacle avoidance and a 4K camera are some features. With 3rd party apps you can plan a flight by simply dragging your finger across a map, uploading the plan to the drone and press play. The drone will fly the route and you can even program height, speed and the direction the camera faces for each stage of the flight. Amazing really. I flew mine across the Hawksbury river the other day and at the farthest point it was 1.2 kilometres away from me. I was flying manually and had a strong signal for the remote control and video feed.

The VR BOX, FPV, (First Person View) goggles only arrived today and I cannot wait to try them out.

If I said I was not green with envy,
I would be wrong. LOL
Just wait a bit for me to get mine and capture some of the Landscape we
have on offer down around here. :) :)
I reckon the DJI 4 is more than just a toy.

1.2 K away you wouldn't be able to see it ? How far from it would you still be able to see it ?
Personally at this time I'd hang back a bit on how much money I put into it .................. 25th of September 2016 an UAV will be replaced by RPA and civil aviation has a few new pages regarding flying RPA's Pages of rules and regs that you would need to be a solicitor to fully work out and would probably struggle even then
A few of the real killers are
Craft Under 2 Kg, flight not over a populous area and within visual line of sight they even stipulate that visual sight must be without binoculars telescopes etc
The populous area can just about wipe you out here is their definition

CIVIL AVIATION SAFETY REGULATIONS 1998 - REG 101.025
Meaning of populous area
For this Part, an area is a populous area in relation to the operation of an unmanned aircraft or rocket if the area has a sufficient density of population for some aspect of the operation, or some event that might happen during the operation (in particular, a fault in, or failure of, the aircraft or rocket) to pose an unreasonable risk to the life, safety or property of somebody who is in the area but is not connected with the operation

Basically a bloke walking his dog across a paddock could come under this regulation ??? Typical government. Am I allowed to say that ?

Not to be a wet blanket but if your flying a drone I hope you have plenty of public liability insurance if something goes wrong cause if not you could be open to a world of trouble. All remote control clubs have this but with new expansion of drones I'm geussing that many don't belong to one.

1.2k's away would indeed be an illegal operation.
Over populated area's, (30 metres away from any thing that's not involved in the shoot) again illegal...
FPV, with a spotter, legal dependant on TX power, then you need a HAM licence!

Automated flight is too hard for CASA to comprehend just yet.!

DJI also have introduced the no fly zones where these particular craft will not even boot up.

Bogger is right, hopefully, in September, section 101 will be ironed out and we will have a good, fair set of guide lines to fly by.
Being a Quantus jet pilot not being one of them.

For the record, I fly a drone and have had mine for over a year.
I love using it for fun and out in the gold fields.

However, I don't mind poking a good story

Yes and I'm sure you use it responsibly but the pages of new regulations that come into force in September are those that must cater for the lowest common denominator ............................. I think idiots comes under that heading somewhere :)

Yes I do use it responsibly. Mine actually has safety guards for the blades and I've only ever flown it out in the bush on my own.

Saw someone flying a big expensive looking drone while detecting the other day at my honey hole. I turned around and heard a loud crack followed by a thud, the bloke flew it straight into the footy goal posts, I called out to him "that sounded really expensive", he didnt reply, just sort of shook his head.....

Personally Ramjet l think drones are awesome and well done to you, nice photos too. I am thinking of getting one , one of these days and you have inspired me to give it a go. Good on you, enjoy your drone

Here are a couple of apps to help you find the NO FLY zones in Australia and some Youtubes on the legalities of flying Drones in Australia.

Android and Apple http://www.hoverapp.io/ I have this app on my phone.
