OLD Plate Found and cleaned found near railway any idea what it means ?

Moved to finds identification, might get more replies there, cheers.

N.S.W.G.R loco plate is what I came up with.

Maybe a wagon. Ten tons is a bit light for a Loco.

At first i thought it was a steambox plate from a train but it could possibly be off an old firemans barrel on wheels..

The current term is Gunzel.

Could be the rego plate off one of the hand cranked Derrick Cranes ....
On the loading dock at old Railway sidings etc.....
Just my thoughts.....

I read somewhere the first wooden rail wagons were 10t capacity and they were upgraded to 16t with the introduction of steel.

found this one on the Internet that looks to be about the period and size, can't see a load plate though.

its off a freight car i would think ... you can google nsw govt rys as a starting point ..

I thought maybe the "4588" might've been an I.D plate from an old 45 series loco, ie 4588, but the 10 ton threw that out the window.

The wagon shown by Wally is an "S" type wagon or similar. There where very common. The plate could be off one of those.

Just googled "railway wagon registered plate"and found some images of British ones.Also some links to some for sale for up to 125.I love how things were built to last back then.Cool item to find.

I think there was also a coal wagon variant, also 10 ton.

A little more info. The "registered" wagons were owned by private companies but certified to run on NSW government railway lines. Being found in the Hunter Valley it could be from one of the many privately owned coal hoppers.
