Newprospector. I hope you got your detector sorted out. I just bought myself a second hand SD2000 and incurred the wrath of the local electricity supply. I tried testing mine in the backyard and all I got was a wailing like a police siren. My heart sank as I thought I had bought a dud. The next day I took it over to the park and it worked fine. I also found that electric fences will also interfere. It is a fussy beast. As for telling if it is modified, do a google search for ones for sale. The seller will say if it is modified or not and usually who did the mods. The 2 main mods are the GPM mod and the 4 frequency modification. The GPM mod will usually have another 2 dials sitting above CHANNEL 1 and CHANNEL 2 on the coil side of the box. The 4 frequency mod will have an extra dial selector and you will be able to turn the dial to 4 different frequencies and next to that dial will be the numbers 1 - 4. This will be situated on the rear of the control box where the ON/OFF switch is located. Sometimes this dial selector might be in place of the ON/OFF switch. Hope this helps.
